Section 301 Tariffs & Import Duties

See exactly what equipment costs after duties, shipping, and compliance — before you buy. Compare your total landed cost across suppliers and origins in real time.

Three things procurement teams need to understand

The sticker price is never the real price. Duties, freight, and taxes can add 25–40% to equipment cost depending on where it ships from. Here is what matters for Canadian pharma buyers.

01 · Section 301

US tariffs on Chinese-origin goods

Section 301 of the US Trade Act authorizes tariffs on goods imported into the United States from China. Originally enacted in 2018 and extended multiple times since, these duties currently add 25% or more to the import cost of most industrial equipment of Chinese origin entering the US market. While Section 301 is a US measure, it creates indirect pressure on the global supply chain: US distributors pay more to stock Chinese equipment, and those costs are passed down the chain — including to Canadian buyers sourcing through US intermediaries.

02 · Canadian Import Duties

HS 8427 & 8428 — material handling equipment

Canada's Most Favoured Nation (MFN) tariff schedule applies to imports from countries without a preferential trade agreement. For powered industrial trucks (HS 8427) and lifting equipment (HS 8428), the MFN rate is approximately 6.5–8%. Equipment sourced directly from China is subject to this full MFN rate. US-origin equipment entering Canada under CUSMA/USMCA may qualify for a 0% preferential rate — but only if it genuinely meets rules-of-origin criteria. Equipment assembled in the US from predominantly Chinese components often does not qualify, exposing buyers to unexpected duty assessments at the border.

03 · Jesterlift Duty Advantage

Canadian-origin: zero cross-border duties

Jesterlift equipment is manufactured in Canada. Domestic procurement means no import duty exposure whatsoever — no MFN calculation, no rules-of-origin audit risk, no broker fees for duty classification. Pricing is published in CAD and quoted FOB Toronto, which means freight is predictable and short. For Canadian pharma, biotech and food manufacturers, Jesterlift represents the path of least resistance from a customs and landed-cost perspective. The calculator on this page quantifies the difference precisely.
